In Japanese culture, the tiger and the dragon symbolize two strong and contrasting animals, each with different meanings:

  • Dragon : The dragon is a symbol of power, wisdom, protection and luck. In Japanese mythology, the dragon is often portrayed as benevolent and divine. It represents the male principle (yang) and is associated with water, rain and the sky.

  • Tiger : The tiger symbolizes strength, courage and energy. It is considered a warrior and defender symbol and is often associated with the earth and the yin principle. In Japan, the tiger also has a protective role and stands for protection against evil spirits.

Together, these two animals represent the balance of opposing forces and principles – as in Taoism, where the balance between yin and yang is of central importance.
